when it began
Built in 1826, Tyrone Milling Company started as a grist mill, grinding local wheat and other grains into flour: where area farmers would bring thier grain crops to be ground into a useable product. For this service, the miller was usually paid one-tenth of the total amount collected. The Mill, located in Ironville PA, was built alongside the Little Juniata River, which provided a steady water supply to power the horizontal waterwheel used in those early days.
During it's long history the mill has changed hands six times. The previous owners' names included Lyon, Stewart, Beyer, Kessler, Johnson, and now the Hershey Family.
